The design of a layout must also include the selection of appropriate material handling and storage equipment, including equipment to move incoming supplies, to move product between work stations, to move finished goods to shipping, to store supplies, WIP (Work in Progress), and completed products. They also recommend making sure that data flows with inventory, and that a maintenance plan be developed for material handling equipment.
I believe that some of these principles conflict with other ideas of industrial engineering. For example, maintaining flow requires that products move in small batches (in fact, a batch size of 1, where possible) rather than in large unit loads.
Robot Rx is a good example of an integrated system of receiving, storage, dispensing, and tracking.
